Unless your cable has been out for a few years, you’ll have heard of the new ‘mommy makeover’ craze that’s sweeping through our nation. While some scoff at the idea, most moms completely understand the desire to regain control of their appearance.

The most popular portion of the mommy makeover is the ‘tummy tuck’ or abdominoplasty. Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure to make the abdomen more firm. The surgery involves tightening the muscles and fascias of the abdominal wall as well as removing excess skin and fat from the lower and middle abdomen.

This is for women (and men as well!) who, despite an endless amount of sit-ups, dieting, and exercise, have been unable to achieve a trim waistline. This saggy belly isn’t only due to pregnancy and the stretched muscles, fascia, and skin that comes along with the post-baby belly, however. Any individual that’s lost a significant amount of weight can experience sagging or ‘pooching’ bellies.

The most common candidates are, unsurprisingly, women who have had multiple children and want to get rid of the resulting excess tissue and sagging muscles. The best candidates are women or men who are in good health and have had major weight loss, but still have fat pockets and excess skin in the lower and middle abdomen.  A tummy tuck should be considered only when other options have been explored, such as dieting and fitness programs. Women that intend to become pregnant again should wait to have a tummy tuck. Pregnancy following this procedure can cause the sutures in the muscles to separate.

The procedure is performed by making an incision from hip to hip, just above the pubic area. Another incision will  free the navel from surrounding skin, allowing it to be detached from the surrounding skin. This reveals the muscles and fascia, which will be tightened with sutures. At this stage, liposuction can also be performed to remove excess fat. This is often referred to as body sculpting. This helps to refine the transition zones of the abdomen and create a natural smooth appearance.
