“Voluma is a game-changing product. The effects are instantly noticeable in a real and natural looking way. This is my favorite filler of all” — Dr Bryan McIntosh

When people think of dermal fillers to battle signs of aging, they probably think of Botox as a quick, nonsurgical procedure that is less expensive than plastic surgery and requires less recovery time.

But Botox is not a cure-all. It works extremely well on facial lines and wrinkles, but what if the problem you want to correct is loss of volume?

That’s where Voluma comes in.

This hyaluronic acid filler by Allergan (also the makers of Botox) restores volume and reduces hollows and drooping skin to create a revitalized, younger-looking face.

Most of the hyaluronic acid fillers in the market today have a high molecular weight. In contrast, Voluma has a low molecular weight, which is a huge advantage when working with facial areas that need restoration of lost volume – for example, the cheeks, mid-face and jawline.

Another advantage that Voluma offers is the longevity of the treatment. It is the longest lasting of all the FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers. The effects can be seen for up to 2 years, whereas other fillers typically have a life cycle of between 6-12 months.

At Dr Bryan McIntosh’s practice in Bellevue, we have had great success with Voluma, and we look forward to helping you decide if the product is the right solution for you.

Meanwhile, here are some quick answers to the most common questions we receive from our patients about Voluma:

Voluma before and after

1) Is Voluma Safe?

The product has been available since 2005 and is currently used in 72 countries. It’s proven to be safe and effective, and unless you have certain allergies or pre-existing conditions (that your doctor will discuss with you), the treatment can be received without too many worries.

2) How Is Voluma Administered?

The product is administered with a multiple injection technique deep into the skin.

3) How Long Before Results Can Be Seen?

The treatment takes about an hour and you should be able to see results right away. It’s advisable though to wait 1-2 weeks, for any residual swelling to go down.

4) What Are The Side Effects?

Potential side effects of Voluma are mostly same as any other injectable filler. Some patients may experience mild and temporary discomfort with redness, tenderness or swelling that can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.

5) Is Treatment With Voluma Painful?

Voluma contains lidocaine, a local anesthesia that numbs tissues in a specific area and keeps patients comfortable during the treatment process. A very fine gauge needle is used to administer the product and most people report feeling no more than a quick pinch or a mild pressure.

6) Can The Voluma Treatment Be Reversed?

It is advisable to wait for any residual swelling to dissipate to see the real effects of Voluma. If, for some reason you want to it removed, the product can be dissolved with another injection (like Hylenex) that will rapidly break down the hyaluronic acid.

7) Who Can Get A Voluma Treatment For Volume Loss?

The FDA has approve Voluma for people over 21 years of age.

8) How Much Does The Voluma Treatment Cost?

The cost of your treatment will depend on how many syringes of the product you need. The number depends on various factors like age, genetics and your desired goals, and your doctor will be able to give you more clarity on this during consultation.
